  History  ˜

The Klamath Basin has had a wool pool for many years.  In years past the pool included producers from Klamath and Modoc Counties.  The producers met at a central location in Merrill, Oregon where the wool that had previously been packed into wool sacks, was weighed and loaded onto trucks.

When the price of wool dropped, around the year 2000, the pool lost many producers and so, between the decline in the wool prices, and the loss of producers, the pool didn’t function for a couple of years.

In the past few years, the Biggs Ranch near Malin, Oregon has been generous to offer a location for current producers to bring their wool to be weighed to sell to the wool buyer who also comes to the ranch to buy the wool.

Last year, the pool sold the wool in July, at the Biggs Ranch with R.C. Elliot buying the wool.  The price for 2007 was $.86/pound for finer white face wool, (coarser white face wool is the same price as black face wool)  $.32/pound for black face wool, $.10/pound for tags, $.22/pound for lamb wool and $.15/pound for black wool.

In order for a person to sell their wool through the pool it must be:

  1. Skirted with the bellies and any manure covered wool taken out.
  2. Relatively free of straw, baling twine, marking painted wool, or polyester tarp debris.
  3. Packed into square wool bags closed with clips, burlap wool bags sewn closed with cotton twine, or burlap potato sacks also sewn closed with cotton twine.
  4. “Dog Ears” gathered and tied on each of four corners of burlap bags for grips for the handlers.
  5. Wool bags need to be stored in a dry place, so they stay dry.
  6. Each bag needs to be clearly marked with the producers name, address and type of wool:  white face, black face, lambs, tags, black

There is a list of current producers, and the information for this year’s pool will go out in June with the location, wool buyer, and price the wool buyer is willing to pay.

This will be posted on this website as soon as the information becomes available.
